I had an amazing childhood. I grew up spending most of my time outside, playing in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, just 30 minutes east of Seattle. In 1974, my parents built their own home on about two acres of wooded, green, and serene land that was an oasis of privacy. My Dad enjoyed many outdoor hobbies which included: gardening, beekeeping, and chicken wrangling. My Mom had a sewing room where she spent most of her time during the day. From my earliest years, she mainly did alterations to other people’s clothing. As a kid, I never considered that she was the owner of a work at home business; it’s just what she DID.
We lived on a private loop road. The loop was gravel, about a mile around. Our mailbox was at the entrance of the loop. Whenever we came home in the car, we would stop at the mailbox to pick up the mail. The way it worked was my Mom would pull up really close to the mailbox on the passenger side, so my sister or I could reach inside the mailbox for the stack of letters awaiting our eager fingers. Mom would sift through the envelopes before driving away. I have fond memories of her often pulling out an envelope with our handwritten address, and she would exclaim, “Oh good, I got a check from so-and-so”.
Even at my young age, I knew what that meant. She had performed some sewing for someone and they were sending her a check for her work. Most often she saw her customers in person in her sewing room at home; but every Friday, we drove into Seattle to visit customers for deliveries, and pickups. So I personally knew the people who were sending the money, and I also was very aware of how grateful they were for her superb service, lively conversation, and excellent craftsmanship! At the time, I did not have any idea that her way of life would inspire me so much.
MY INSPIRATION, MY MOM:
Only recently, did I come to recognize my Mom was brilliant in her ability to make money and contribute to our family’s finances by working from home on her own schedule. She was always there for us because her sewing could be flexible around our lives. Interestingly, I don’t remember her ever actually talking about working from home, helping with family finances, entrepreneurship or business ownership, but I certainly caught more than was taught! The example my Mom set working from home has become a deep passion for my own life, although it shows up differently for me. I am absolutely fascinated with the endless possibilities supplied by the internet, marketing, sales, branding, and entrepreneurship!
