I LOVE to read! I love to read about graphic design, branding, and self-improvement. Truthfully, I most often start a book and don’t finish it all the way. I’ve decided any book reviewed on the blog must actually be completed. How does that sound?
I can’t wait to introduce you to this book! When I attended my first blogging conference in September of 2017, someone mentioned this book. I wrote “HILDA” in my notebook and promised myself that I would look it up when I got home. I wish I could remember who mentioned it, because I’d like to thank them!
You can’t miss Jennie Mustafa-Julock’s signature orange cover, with sassypants Hilda on the front.
Oh my entrepreneur friend, you are going to LOVE this! Hilda is the artistic representation of that doubting, fear-filled voice in your head. This book promises that you will soon “Tackle Your Inner Naysayer, Get Out of Your Own Way, and Unleash Your Badassery”. It’s true. This book delivers!
This delightful woman swears a mean streak, not as mean as some, but if you’re like me, there be some words in this book that you may not use everyday. Beware, dangerous words ahead. No, just kidding, but I know some folks are offended with swearing and if you’re one of those-a friendly warning-this book may be on the tough side for you. Jennie cusses in the most lovely way, if that’s possible. There isn’t one f-bomb in the book, but other colorful words are tossed to and fro-often, so if that bothers you, I want to be the one to give you a heads-up.
Anyway, when I came home from the conference, I looked up HILDA. I ordered the book immediately, because, well, it’s gorgeous! I was very drawn not only to the topic (I have been in my own way for years!) but the book cover design as well.
This of course led me to check out her website, where I promptly fell down the rabbit hole…and signed up for her coaching program (best thing ever)! This book review might have been unbiased back in September, but now I’m a TOTAL FAN! Coach Jennie is even BETTER in person than in her book, which was fantastic on its own! So maybe an official disclosure is order, I received no compensation for this book review, but I really, really hope you learn more about Hilda so you can overcome your doubts and fears and be all you are meant to be!

HILDA by Coach Jennie
This book is a light-hearted yet serious look at how we often sabotage our best efforts and what we can do about it.
CONTENT (no spoilers):
This book is really entertaining, yet brutal. Coach Jennie really knows her stuff, which I understand, she’s been studying in her own coaching practice for over a decade. The book is organized around the four faces of this Hilda person, this persona who is the voice in your head trying to keep you from doing anything stupid, like being awesome or successful.
The Four Hildas are:
I Don’t Know
I Don’t Wanna
These categories provide the framework for the book, which goes in-depth into all the ways these four Hildas try to sabotage us. Once you identify your Hilda(s), you can get serious about combating her nonsense.
One thing about Jennie that I like is how she is quick to admit when Hilda has got her by the tail. I really like that, because truth be told, Hilda cannot be eradicated, only tamed. In the preface, Jennie does a funny job of admitting how Hilda tries to hold her back. You will love laughing at yourself when you open your life to understanding your own Hilda!
The book also operates like a resource manual. Each chapter has shorter chapters within, that are titled and cataloged so if I’m dealing with feeling like “I Don’t Wanna”, I can grab the book and identify exactly what flavor of I Don’t Wanna is harassing me. But not just that, there are solutions! She encourages you to dig deep, so you develop your own conversation with this naysayer and bat down her bogus beliefs before she catches you in her net.
This jargon is so helpful in identifying what’s held me back personally for so long!
Hilda is ever-relevant, and no one is beyond her treachery. If you’re an entrepreneur, or anyone trying to do something beyond clocking in and clocking out, if you have dreams to be more than you are, or you have a great idea that can really help people, then you need to know how to wrangle your Hilda!
This book was published in 2016 and is 221 pages, ISBN: 0997983809.
You will love Coach Jennie’s website, which describes a little more about Hilda and also her coaching program. You should book her to speak at your event. You can find Coach Jennie at CoachJennie.com.
Hilda (the book) does have her own website, which is a charming showcase of just how cunning Hilda can be…click HERE.
So if you find yourself STUCK no matter what you do or how hard you try, you may just find what you need in Hilda by Coach Jennie. As Coach Jennie says, Stop squandering your potential. You CAN do the thing you think you can’t do. Really!
Without Coach Jennie, this blog would not exist. I’ve been busting through my own Hilda-isms to get out of my own way and write this blog!
